Ecuador lies on the equator line and is located in the Northwestern corner of South America. It borders Colombia in the North, Peru in the East and South, and the Pacific Ocean on the west. The Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean are also part of Ecuador, and they are 1000 kilometers west of the mainland

One of the nicest and most attractive features of Ecuador is that you can visit it all year long! Due to its geographic location, the country does neither have 4 seasons nor extreme temperatures. Consequently, you can explore it outdoors any time of the year.

Yes,  the Galapagos Islands are a province of Ecuador. Indeed, you have to stop in Ecuador (Quito or Guayaquil) in order to get to the archipelago, as there are no international flights to the Enchanted Islands.

Ecuador’s official language is Spanish, and people say that Loja (a province in the South) has one of the purest Spanish in Latin America. The country also has two official intercultural languages, Quichua and Shuar, but indigenous people speak more than 10 indigenous languages throughout Ecuador. Several of these are still considered mother tongues by local communities.

Ecuador adopted the US dollar as its official currency in 2000. You can withdraw it from local ATMs and change other currencies at banks.

The Galapagos Islands are the most famous destination in Ecuador and probably in the world. After this, the importance or attraction of each destination depends on your favorite activity, and on your interests, preferences, and passions. Ecuador uses 110V electricity with Type A (with 2 flat parallel prongs) or B outlets (with 2 flat parallel prongs and a diameter round or U-shaped earth pin). We recommend you to bring adaptors for your electronic devices to avoid inconveniences throughout the trip.

Tipping is always a personal decision, but you can find some guidelines Perpetua has written for you. 

  • Restaurants in Ecuador include a 10% service fee, and adding tip on top of it is up to you depending on your appreciation of the service experienced
  • Continental Ecuador Guides are usually tipped 
  • Guides in Galapagos are usually tipped
  • Galapagos crew members aboard cruise are usually tipped


Ecuador has excellent medical doctors graduated from local and international universities, and hospitals have the latest technology available to treat patients. Perpetua has a network of health professionals to contact in case one of our clients has a medical emergency, and our guides will be pleased to assist you as interpreter if needed.

Perpetua recommends all our travelers to hire trip insurance for their trips with us. Our team will be available to assist you 24/7. However, unexpected events can happen while traveling, and it is important that you have the pease of mind to go through them.
